Adolf Harnack. The Lutheran Protestant Gnostic: Video Essay

Protestantism rejected the established orthodoxy and magisterial authority of the Catholic Church during the Reformation. While the Reformers supposedly aimed to correct certain doctrinal and practical abuses, this rejection of authority also opened the door to even more radical departures from orthodox theology. Without a strong concept of doctrinal authority, Protestantism has proven unable to prevent the rise of heretical sects under its broad umbrella. See Luther and the "schwaermerei".

The description of Adolf Harnack demonstrates this well. Harnack promoted a view of Jesus that rejected core Christian doctrines like the divinity of Christ, miracles, and the importance of the Old Testament. His theology aligned more with the 2nd-century heretic Marcion than with Christian orthodoxy.

Yet, Harnack remained a prominent "Protestant" scholar. His radical liberal theology flourished because Protestantism's decentralised nature cannot not effectively curtail heretical concepts.

While the original Reformers supposedly aimed to uphold Biblical authority, Protestantism has led to "an acceptance of open heresy" due to its inherent lack of institutional safeguards for orthodoxy. Its insistence on private judgment over common doctrinal standards has resulted in a "wide way" diverse and contradictory theologies, rather than a "narrow gate" of authoritative Christian belief.
