The ABSURDITIES of Being a Landlord in King County - Part 2

When it comes to the current eviction crisis, the spotlight often shines on struggling tenants. But what about the landlords? Meet Jason Roth, a landlord who's been relegated to a nomadic lifestyle—living in his van and crashing on couches—all because his tenant, Karim Hunter, hasn't paid up. Despite charging $4,300 per month for rent, Jason has received a measly $1,000 since March. In a housing climate where the system seems to heavily favor tenants, even a first hearing in eviction court resulted in a continuance, leaving Jason potentially living in his van for another five months. Meanwhile, King County finds itself mired in a 600-case backlog, and that doesn't bode well for landlords or tenants.

Yet, the municipal government offers all sorts of programs aimed at keeping people housed during the winter months—unless, of course, you happen to be a homeowner like Jason. The bureaucracy seems to be failing the very individuals it should be aiding, prioritizing one side of the coin while flipping the other into a pit of uncertainty. While the city scrambles to find solutions for its growing housing woes, landlords are left out in the cold—sometimes, quite literally.
