First day out 11/18/17 I got in stand at 11:00, sat all day had a nice young buck come through at 4:00. I recorded him as he walked around me, I figured he was heading towards my wife’s stand only 100 yards from me, but somehow he never got there. 11/19/17 I climbed in the stand at 12:00, and as I was getting prepared I heard shots on the field about 200 yards to my west. I got prepared as fast as I could, I kept hearing crashing in the woods to my north, and at about 12:15 I saw a big buck came out of the brush from the west, he hit the deer highway (an area where there are fences on both sides and the deer run on it when they are in a hurry). He turned to run south, straight towards me, I could see as he was coming that his front shoulder was pretty messed up, he was running on three legs. I never take running shots but I didn’t want him to run off and die needlessly. As he got closer, I could see he was the bigger buck I missed my chance on that buck I talk about in my earlier bow hunting videos from this year. He got to the corner, never slowed as he turned east on the deer highway, I was following him with the rifle and made one shot attempt with my father’s .300 Savage model 99 lever action with buck horn sights, which was his favorite rifle. My father had died July 26th 2017, and I wanted to use his rifle for this season as a tribute to him. I shot dead on and the deer kept running, about 20 yards later he turned south to jump the fence and enter the woods; he hit the barbed wire fence and bounced backwards, then leaped forward and made it through. At this point I was pretty sure I hit him, but was not positive. I watched for a while, and then climbed down from my stand. I sent a text to my wife who was coming out about 30 minutes after me to sit in her stand. She was not there yet, and her stand is about 100 yards to the south of where I thought the deer was, so I told her to quietly get in her stand. She was glassing the area and then saw the buck, but not very well, he was behind a clump of birch trees from where she was. I sent a text to my neighbor Dan to find out if he had shot at this deer; he said yes he had shot him. Then I could hear a four wheeler coming as my neighbor Dan was searching for the buck he hit. I told my wife to be ready as I was going to walk up towards the animal, I went about 100 yards east of my stand and there he was head up, trying to drag himself back down into the thickets. I put one last round in him at close range, and he died shortly thereafter. He had gone about 60 yards pulling himself across the leaves. I checked the buck for wounds, and I could see that Dan’s shot was in the shoulder and lower chest area, but the bullet never entered the chest cavity. My running shot was bad, I never led the buck and hit him right in the lower ass and took out his left rear leg; he could no longer stand. Not the best story, but a very nice buck that did not go to waste, which was the best I could hope for. He was running pretty fast for three legs, I just got lucky, thanks for the help dad!
