In an exclusive interview with African Stream, Mayibuye Mandela, the great-grandson of South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, called on his country’s government to do more to support the people of Palestine. An Israeli onslaught has, so far, killed more than 6,500 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. This comes amid the escalation that kicked off 7 October in Gaza in the 75-year war between Israel and Palestine.

Speaking on 24 October from Johannesburg, the political activist and commentator urged the African National Congress-led government to go beyond rhetoric in its support for the Palestinians. Mandela argued that the first decisive step that South Africa should take is to close the Israeli embassy.
