Dr. Martin focuses on 3 organizations involved the process of modifying DNA through RNA in the beginning of this; the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Darwinian Chemical Systems (DCS) and venture firm Flagship Pioneering.

The NSF is an independent federal agency that promotes the progress of Science, National health and prosperity and secure national defense. Dr. Martin says they financed this DCS project to use RNA to modify DNA and indeed they did to the tune of 1.5 million dollars. They described their initial work as "in-vitro evolution experiments." Their work would consist of generating "RNA-like structures that undergo self reproduction with heritable mutation. " That sounds a lot like DNA. They foresaw DCS would "form the basis of synthetic biology that has the potential of constructing self replicating systems using the tools of preparative chemistry."

Ten years into this project, Dr. Martin says Flagship ventures came along and started "a little company no one has ever heard of called Moderna." The founder of Flagship is Noubar Afeyan who is now one of 5 billionaires associated with Moderna. He has an estimated 2.9 billion fortune and his company is an incubator for other biotech companies who aspire to be the next Moderna. Flagship launched Moderna in 2012 and it was their 4th fund.

Afeyan provided this quote about the boat load of money he is raising for biotechnology and therapuetics to Forbes in his cover story issue that without the pandemic, "we probably would not be as hellbent on doing it as we are now."

Since Moderna succeeded in being able to alter the genetic code of systems, they were able to have their first experiment in living beings on humans in the experiment called Covid-19 Dr. Martin explains.
