Joseph's Dreams and the Path to Egypt | Bible Journey
Inspired by Genesis Chapter 37.
Jacob, known as Israel, had settled in the land of Canaan, a place unfamiliar yet brimming with potential. He had twelve sons, but his youngest, Joseph, was the apple of his eye. Joseph was merely seventeen when he had begun herding sheep with his half-brothers, the sons of his father’s other wives, Bilhah and Zilpah. He often found himself unable to tolerate their actions, reporting them to his father, thus driving a wedge between him and his siblings.
Israel expressed his love for Joseph by bestowing upon him a multi-colored tunic, a symbol of favor and distinction. This act deepened the resentment among his brothers, who viewed Joseph as a thorn in their side, a constant reminder of their father's biased affection.
Joseph was not just the favored child; he was also a dreamer. One night, he had a compelling dream that he could not keep to himself. "I dreamed we were in the field, tying bundles of grain," Joseph told his brothers. "Suddenly, my bundle rose and stood upright, while your bundles gathered around and bowed to mine." This revelation infuriated his brothers more than ever. They began to openly question whether Joseph expected to rule over them, further nurturing their growing hatred for him.
Not long after, Joseph had another dream, equally provocative. "In my dream," he said, "the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowed down to me." When he confided in his father and brothers, even Israel was taken aback. "Are you suggesting that your mother and I, along with your brothers, should bow down to you?" he asked, although keeping Joseph's words in the back of his mind.
Soon after, his brothers took the flock to Shechem for grazing, and Israel sent Joseph to check on them. Joseph roamed the fields until he met a man who told him his brothers had moved further to Dothan. Oblivious to the impending peril, Joseph continued his journey.
Upon seeing Joseph approach, his brothers plotted to kill him. "Look, the dreamer comes," they jeered. Reuben, the eldest, intervened, "Let's not kill him. Throw him into this pit instead." Joseph arrived, was stripped of his colorful tunic, and thrown into an empty pit. As the brothers sat down to eat, a caravan of Ishmaelites passed by. Judah saw an opportunity: "Why kill him when we can profit from him?" And so, they sold Joseph for twenty shekels of silver, beginning his unforeseen journey to Egypt.
Reuben, unaware of the sale, returned to the pit and was devastated to find it empty. The brothers then staged Joseph’s death using his tunic and goat's blood, causing immense grief for Israel, who mourned deeply for his lost son.
Little did they know, Joseph had been sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh in Egypt. Thus began a chapter in Joseph’s life, a mixture of trials and triumphs, leading him to a destiny his family could never have imagined.
