In October, Hamas, the Palestinian group in control of the Gaza Strip, initiated a sudden attack on Israel, resulting in over 1,400 casualties and the capture of hostages. In response, Israel launched airstrikes that have led to an estimated 6,500 casualties.

On October 14, Israel announced an impending offensive by air, land, and sea against the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of completely destroying Hamas and rescuing the 200-plus hostages held by the group. This has resulted in extensive destruction of entire neighborhoods, and Israeli airstrikes continue.

In mid-October, Israel issued an ultimatum to approximately 1.1 million residents in the northern Gaza Strip, urging them to relocate to the southern part of the territory. The deadline, which had been extended multiple times, expired on October 15.

Northern Gaza, including the City of Gaza and two refugee camps, is among the most densely populated areas of the territory. Hamas, in control of Gaza, advised civilians to disregard the evacuation order, describing it as "false propaganda." Nonetheless, thousands of Palestinians followed Israel's directive and vacated their homes.

Despite this, Israel has continued to bomb various locations in the southern part of the territory. The situation has become so dire in southern Gaza that, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, some civilians are returning to the north.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has stated that the military campaign in Gaza may take a month, two, or even three, but the ultimate goal is to eliminate Hamas. Meanwhile, the military wing of Hamas, known as the al-Qassam Brigades, continues to launch rockets into Israel.
