The Golden State Killer was a notorious serial rapist, burglar, and murderer who operated in California between 1974 and 1986, committing at least 13 murders, 50 rapes, and over 100 burglaries. The case remained unsolved for decades until 2018 when investigators used forensic DNA technology to identify a suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, who was a former police officer and Navy veteran. DeAngelo was arrested, pleaded guilty to all charges, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in August 2020. The case is considered one of the most complex and groundbreaking criminal investigations in U.S. history, credited with revolutionizing the use of DNA evidence in criminal investigations.
