I Just Scored One Of My Favorite Retro Gaming Pickups EVER!

It's not every day that I get to add one of my most sought-after items to my video game collection, but I was able to do that. In Bloomington, Illinois, is The Item Shop. This is a retro video game store that features a ton of excellent items. I was in here a few weeks ago to talk to them about a few other things, and I noticed something that I had to come back and get. What was it? Well it was one of my favorite retro gaming pickups ever, we managed to get R.O.B. the Robot from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, and it's mostly complete.

I never really owned a R.O.B. back in the day. How can you never really own something? You either own it or you don't, right? Well, before I actually had an NES, one of my middle brother's friends lent us his NES for over a year. And he had R.O.B. the Robot that he lent us at the same time. I got to mess around with it quite a bit, I played quite a bit of Gyromite with it, but when I had to give the system back to my brother's friend he also took R.O.B.. When I finally got my NES, it was the Challenge Set that did not feature R.O.B. the Robot.

This R.O.B. does have some yellowing, one of the battery contacts needs to be cleaned up, and the labels on top of the gyro spinners are bubbling. But for a 40-year-old toy, this is in pretty beautiful condition. I don't have a CRT to play him on, so what I may end up doing is simply cleaning him up for display, because he won't work on a modern flat panel.

In addition to R.O.B., The Item Shop had a number of other excellent-looking items. They had the very first issue of Nintendo Power, an AV Famicom (which I absolutely want both of these). They had a number of great handheld games too, including Metroid Zero Mission. I always think it's cool when I see them having manuals for people to purchase as well, this way they can complete their collection.

One of the cool things about Ryan from The Item Shop is the fact that he also puts on the Illinois Game Con. Located at the Interstate Center in Bloomington Illinois, we have been there as a vendor for the last 3 years, and we will be there June the 1st, 2024. Mark your calendars as this is going to be a tremendous event you will not want to miss.
