Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson says there would be “severe consequences” for Iran if they become involved in broadening the Israel-Gaza conflict.

“Iran is intimately involved in these attacks, and Iran would be certainly involved if there is an escalation of these attacks,” Mr Paterson told Sky News Australia.

Mr Paterson says Iran has “enormous influence” over other terrorist groups in the Middle East region.

“What Iran needs to understand in return is that the resolve of the United States and its allies is also very clear," he said.

“There would be very severe consequences, obviously, if it were to be involved in broadening or widening this conflict.”
