Tired of looking after the orphan Heidi, her aunt leaves her in the Swiss Alps in the care of her grumpy grandfather, until one day she sells her to a rich family in Frankfurt, where she must keep company with Klara, the couple's paralyzed daughter. Despite these misfortunes, Heidi captivates the entire family, but does not give up on returning to her grandfather.
📚 The film was based on the children's novel of the same name by Johanna Spyri, from 1880.
Halfway through filming the film, the dream sequence was added to the script. There were reports that Temple was behind the dream sequence and that she was pushing for it enthusiastically, but in her autobiography she vehemently denied this. Her contract did not give her or her parents any creative control over the films in which she appeared. Although she enjoyed the opportunity to wear braids and be lifted on a tightrope, she saw it as the collapse of any serious attempt by the studio to build on the dramatic role of the previous film Wee Willie Winkie.
Temple made another film in 1937, Wee Willie Winkie (See on channel: https://youtu.be/4gWXmTS19SE). The child actress was getting older and the studio questioned how long she could continue playing "cute" roles when Heidi was filmed, but she maintained her position at number one at the box office for the third year in a row.
