Are You Even A Retro Gamer If You Never Did THIS In Tecmo Bowl On NES?

One of the greatest games of all time for the Original Nintendo Entertainment System had to be Tecmo Bowl. You had all the teams from the NFL at the time, even with player names and numbers. As a child of the '80s, I loved Tecmo Bowl because my team of choice, the Chicago Bears, was amazing in this game. One of the things I loved to do was something that, if you didn't do yourself, can you even call yourself a retro video gamer if you never did THIS?

Just like in actual football, Tecmo Bowl mixed up running and passing plays. While Walter Payton wasn't in the game, Chicago still had a great running back at the time. They also had a certain Punky QB, aka Jim McMahon. McMahon was many things, a cannon-armed quarterback wasn't one of them. But, there was a trick in Tecmo Bowl that would make it look like he was the precursor to Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers, and that was the Tecmo Bowl Deep Fade!

See, with only 4 plays on offense and defense to choose from, the defense would select what specific play to defend. As such if you chose the wrong play you could get burned, or really, really burned. If you chose a running play to defend and the other team ran to the other side of the field, they'd get a decent gain. Now if the defense selected to defend a run and it was a pass play, there could be some real fireworks!

On these blown coverage plays, you can see where the defenders are in relation to your wide receivers via an arrow. If your deep threat was undefended, you could just fade way back with your quarterback until you were about to get sacked, throw the ball at the last minute, and have a super crazy deep pass and completion! This was something that was literally indefensible as I would Super Bowl Shuffle all the way to the end zone!!

I did this all the time and won many a game thanks to it. Did you ever do this trick? Did you ever get mad when someone would do it to you? Let me know in the comments!
