Dietrich von Hildebrand did not publish his memoirs, nor did he even seek to republish any of his essays against Nazism. Nor did he later wish to highlight his testimony in Vienna: he never saw himself as a hero or as someone deserving of special praise. Leaving the publication of his story to posterity is proof of a generous spirit. However, this book is really his. It is an autobiographical work, a self-revelation. In preparing this volume, we sought not to alter the framework: our objective was to create a well-crafted framework ― mainly through historical notes ― that allows the reader to relive Hildebrand's story with all the relevant information at their disposal. ― John Henry Crosby, in the presentation.
