Catching Freshwater Snakes and Turtles! (From the Vault)
Title - Catching Freshwater Snakes and Turtles!
Here is one from the vault, this one was filmed a while ago but it was a video showing a very large problem that we have here in Queensland and that is the Cane Toad and how much devastation they are causing to our native wildlife. Since making this video it has been brought to my attention that to catch native wildlife in Queensland is in fact against the wildlife act and therefore I no longer handle any wildlife protected by the act, but I still think it is very important to raise awareness for the destruction this introduced species the Cane Toad is causing not only in my backyard but all over Australia.
The Story: After noticing an increase in the number of Cane Toads and a slight increase in the number of dead animals I had been finding down my creek, I wanted to find the 2 species in my area that could successfully catch and eat cane toads without dying and those 2 species are both reptiles. One being a snake (Keelback) and the other being a turtle (Saw-Shelled Turtle). Since I only had one weekend to try to film this, I searched as hard as I could and in the end managed to find these 2 beautiful species and it made me feel great to think that these two beautiful creatures have adapted to the environment and are doing their bit to conquer the problem!
Why were Cane Toads were introduced?
Cane Toads were introduced in 1935 into Australia by some ning-nong to stop a species of beetle called a "Cane Beetle" eating the farmers crops. Since their crops was their lifestyle they thought that bringing in a different species that could eat the beetle would stop the problem. It didn't end there, Cane Toads ignored the beetles and spread across Australia. As you can see in the video Cane Toads have Poison just under their skin that can kill an animal as big as a Crocodile. This has caused millions of native animal deaths across Australia and has even made animals critically endangered.
Hey guys/girls, sorry that I haven't posted a video in a while, there had been so much going on with school and family stuff... But I look forward to uploading once again on a more regular basis :) I hope you enjoy this video and if you can share with your friends and family that would be great.
