While its name resembles that of the well-known LA neighborhood, Bel-Aire is actually a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas. But the Fresh Prince would still approve of this Midwest residential enclave. It's got six parks, several highly rated schools and a slew of community events, all about 10 miles from Downtown Wichita. “Bel Aire is the epitome of small-town charm with big-city convenience,” says River City Realty owner-broker Jack Silvers. “It’s right outside of Wichita, but the size of the houses and tight-knit community makes it unlike anywhere else in the city.”

Throughout Bel Aire, there are a variety of housing styles constructed anywhere between the midcentury and modern era. You’ll find several brick façade ranch styles and split levels from the 1960s. Neo-eclectic dwellings with spacious three-car garages built in the early 2000s are also common. Within the last five years, custom-built modern farmhouses and large Craftsman homes have been built. No matter which decade they were made, houses here typically have four to five bedrooms and sit on quarter to half-acre lots. Compared to neighboring Wichita’s average $200,000 selling price, an older home in Bel Aire costs around $220,000, and a newer build is in the $350,000 to $400,000 range.

Children attend Isely Traditional Magnet Elementary. Accompanying its B-minus grade on Niche, the school prides itself on contributing to numerous charity organizations. For example, students participate in an annual turkey drive for Thanksgiving and jump rope to raise money for the American Heart Association. After graduating fifth grade, students attend Stucky Middle School. Then, they go to the award-winning Northeast Magnet High School, which has an A on Niche. In addition to the traditional curriculum, students focus on one of three programs: science, art or law and public service.

For a private education, students also have two faith-based options. Sunrise Christian Academy boasts an impressive athletics department, and the basketball team is a part of the Nike Elite High School Basketball Program. At Resurrection Catholic School, students can participate in the Religion Bowl, a trivia competition against other parochial schools in the area.

While every park in Bel Aire has something worth visiting, there are a few that stand out. For instance, play a round of disc golf at Alley Park’s 9-hole course or hike around 7-acre Eagle Lake Park. The namesake body of water is also perfect for a day of boating and fishing. At Central Park, the playground atop sandy terrain is where kids will want to spend most of their days. They can also cool off in the city pool during the summer or play youth sports like football, baseball or basketball at the Bel Aire Recreation Complex. Adults can even work out in the fitness center or take yoga classes here.

The small community of about 7,000 people comes together for several seasonally relevant events throughout the year. Summer is celebrated with the Hot Dawgs Pool Party, where residents fittingly eat franks while their dogs swim in the city pool. Christmas in Bel Aire consists of a tree lighting, live holiday music and a Santa photo-op at the city hall. However, the city’s largest bash is the Spring Festival, where 13,000 eggs are scattered across the city, and the local police department signals the start of the search with their lights and sirens.

While you may have to drive a bit for commercial centers, the city is close to two major Wichita thoroughfares: Woodlawn Boulevard and Rock Road. “Most people barely know the difference between Bel Aire and Wichita, which really speaks to the city’s convenience,” says Silvers. You can easily pick up groceries from the nearby Dillons or Sam’s Club, but if you’d rather go out to eat, a few locally owned eateries are nearby. Devour wagyu cheeseburgers from Jumbo’s Beef & Brew or the Vietnamese fare at Pho Cuong. If you’re in the mood for retail therapy, Bradley Fair is less than 5 miles away. The open-air shopping center has over 50 nationally known restaurants and retailers.

With all the benefits of suburban living and proximity to Kansas’s largest city, it’s easy to call Bel Aire home.
