At 10:58 p.m., while assisting the Texas Department of Public Safety in intercepting a fleeing vehicle, shots were fired from the suspects. One bullet hit Lieutenant Resendez's vehicle's front, while another pierced him below his vest. Despite being quickly transported to Valley Baptist Hospital, Lieutenant Resendez lost his life due to the injuries. Following a pit maneuver, both assailants were captured and now face charges of evading arrest, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and capital murder. With a commendable service history, Lieutenant Resendez had been with the San Benito Police Department for 27 years, following tenures at the Brownsville and Palm Valley Police Departments.
