First known film adaptation of the short story Le Maître Chat or Le Chat Botté, by French writer Charles Perrault, based on an Italian story.

In the story, an anthropomorphic cat uses trickery and deception to gain power, wealth, and a princess's hand in marriage for his penniless master.

In this comedy and fantasy film, the cat is played by an actor dressed as a feline, who acts alongside others in normal costumes or dressed as animals.
