When Patrice Lumumba - as DRC’s founding leader - had the audacity to think it was up to the Congolese to decide what to do with their precious minerals, it didn’t go down well with the West. Especially as one of those precious minerals was uranium, and one of the Western powers - the US. America was in a nuclear arms race with arch-rival the USSR at the time.
