Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are projected to rise by approximately 1% in 2023, reaching a new record high, according to preliminary research by climate scientists.

Cutting #carbonpollution almost in half this decade is essential to meet global warming limits and avoid devastating climate consequences. Ideally, global CO2 emissions should be decreasing by about 5% this year, but the research indicates that they will continue to rise by an estimated 0.5% to 1.5%.

This disturbing trend demonstrates the immense challenge of rapidly reducing emissions to align with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The finalized analysis, to be released in December, will coincide with critical UN climate talks in the United Arab Emirates, which will likely focus on the future of fossil fuels, the primary source of CO2 emissions. Scientists stress the need to transition away from fossil fuels and grow clean energy to address this alarming trend of rising emissions.
