STATEMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON:

The University of Southampton holds extensive collections of contemporary archives for the purposes of study and research, which are available to the public to use under the University's regulations for the use of archive collections.

Like many repositories with archives covering periods of more recent history, it may be necessary on occasions for the University to withhold some material under exemptions set out in the Freedom of Information Act 2000, all of which seek to balance public rights of access to material with competing responsibilities and obligations.

The University gave Mr Lownie access to all parts of the archive it was permitted to, for which he expressed thanks to the University in his book.
