TheoLogical pt1: Aristotle, Aquinas, Faith and Reason [Introduction]

Aquinas, Aristotle, reason and faith: The 13th century philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas played a pivotal role in harmonizing reason and faith. Aquinas was deeply influenced by the works of Aristotle, and sought to reconcile Aristotle's rational philosophy with Christian theology. Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, emphasised logical reasoning and empirical evidence as the primary sources of knowledge. His metaphysical works explored deep questions about ethics, the soul, causality, and the nature of reality.
Christianity also relies on divine revelation and faith in matters beyond the material world. Aquinas argued that reason and faith could be reconciled, and philosophy could support theology.
In this video series, we explore Aquinas' Aristotelian arguments, how we know what is true, how we separate truth from sophistry, and how we reconcile reason and faith. We analyse how Aquinas incorporated Aristotelian metaphysics and logic into a systematic Christian theology.
For Aquinas, faith and reason were two harmonious paths to truth - and philosophy aided understanding of spiritual matters. Aquinas' life work demonstrates how ancient Greek reason and Christian faith can be unified into a cohesive philosophical system that shaped the development of Western thought. His arguments remain influential today in philosophy, ethics, and theology.
Join us as we examine the teachings of these two intellectual giants, Aristotle and Aquinas, and discuss how their insights elevated both logical reasoning and religious belief.
We also do a detour to examine the nasty, low opinion that intellectual midget Martin Luther had of reason.

Let's explore.
