KARINE de Sousa is allergic to sunlight. The 33-year-old from Brazil, was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum when she was three years old. The extremely rare condition means if she does expose her skin to the sun she develops spots and marks, which can develop into melanomas - types of skin cancer. Karine said: “I have already had 219 surgeries to remove lesions.” When she and her husband, Edmilson, 28, announced Karine was pregnant with their daughter, Zaya, on social media, they received a mix of positive and negative responses. A lot of the negativity centred on calling Karine ‘irresponsible’ for having a child. She explained: “According to the doctors, the chances of my child having the same condition is under one per cent.” Trolls also went as far as to say she ‘wasn’t meant to have’ children and that her child would be ‘scared’ of her. The family are also subjected to stares when they do go out. Karine said: “But I don’t let it affect me. I simply brush it off.” The couple dreamt of having children and are now enjoying family life with their seven-month-old. Edmilson said: “Zaya is lucky to have a mother who is determined, strong and a fighter like Karine.”
