This interview is with Anthony Elia the Director of the Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University. Anthony organized a viewing of the Codex Sassoon, a 1100 year old manuscript that is the earliest most complete version of the Hebrew Bible.

Unlike a scroll, a codex is bound like a book which allows for easier and faster navigation of the content. The Codex Sassoon also includes vocalization, punctuation, cantillation marks and other marginalia that are of interest to those who study the Torah. But the Codex Sassoon has been in private hands and very few people had access to it.

The Codex was viewed in several cities in addition to the even in SMU including Los Angeles, New York and Jerusalem. In May of 2023 the Codex was auctioned by Sotheby’s and achieved the record price of 38 million dollars making it the most expensive Jewish manuscript in history. The Codex is now the property of the Anu Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.
