A cat is a small carnivorous mammal that is commonly kept as a pet. It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae and is scientifically known as Felis catus 12. Cats are characterized by their supple low-slung bodies, finely molded heads, long tails that aid in balance, and specialized teeth and claws that adapt them to a life of active hunting 2. They come in various colors and breeds, and their eyes are well adapted to low light conditions 1. Cat communication includes vocalizations like meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting as well as cat-specific body language 1. Although cats are social animals, they are solitary hunters. As predators, they are crepuscular, i.e., most active at dawn and dusk. They can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small mammals. They also secrete and perceive pheromones 1. Female domestic cats can have kittens from spring to late autumn in temperate zones and throughout the year in equatorial regions, with litter sizes often ranging from two to five kittens 12.
