Central Park is a favorite for many. Manhattan was rapidly increasing in the early nineteenth century, with its population having increased fourfold, and residents were in desperate need of open areas for rest and pleasure. The city grid did not feature any major open spaces for recreational purposes, and the largest park at the time was Battery Park in southern Manhattan.
