note: What is the "Belt and Road" you ask?
"Dmitry Kozyrev writing about the Belt and Road Forum currently underway in Beijing points out that the old world is fading, and the contours of the new world are becoming clearer as the Belt and Road project develops.
It all started a decade ago with a simple idea: we need to develop trade infrastructure, i.e. railways, ports, transshipment hubs and warehouses. This concept reflected a simple reality: China was on the verge of becoming the world's new economic superpower, overtaking the United States, and was trading not only with the West but increasingly with the Global South. Problem is, the infrastructure of global trade flows had been built over decades and centuries for a different kind of trade - between the West and its periphery, its former colonies. It turned out that new trade patterns needed a new world - in every sense. Last year, China's trade with its Belt and Road partners rose to $2.9 trillion and is growing at an average annual rate of 6.4 per cent, slowly overtaking its previous trade with the West. Chinese construction workers have completed $1.3 trillion worth of work around the world, and new contracts have already been signed for two trillion.
That's not all. Trade not only drives production (and the prosperity of countries and continents), it also creates the need for new industrial standards, financial structures and settlement systems. Then there are commercial courts and arbitration. But let us not forget the cooperation of scientists and developers of new technologies, as well as museums, theatres and cultural centres.
This is how, naturally and gradually, a new world is created. And with it new principles of how countries and peoples should interact with each other. And these principles are not dictated from Beijing - first of all, because the first principle contained in the White Paper "A Global Community of Shared Future: China's Proposals and Actions" is that no one should dictate anything to anyone."
