The author Arthur C. Clarke, during his quest to understand space, downloaded several photos from NASA’s website in 2001, and he was convinced that he had found evidence of life on Mars. He saw "trees" in images from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, Something on Mars looked so much like trees that they were nicknamed "the banyan trees of Mars.
However, further analysis revealed that the dunes were covered in a thin layer of frozen carbon dioxide. Over time, the wind had eroded the dunes, leaving streaks of dark sand that looked like tree trunks.

Clarke was not the only one who was fooled. The images were so convincing that even some scientists were convinced they were looking at real trees. The "banyan trees of Mars" are a cautionary tale about the limits of our understanding of the Universe. They remind us to never jump to conclusions and be open to new possibilities.
