Messi trains with Argentina but will he be fit for Peru World Cup qualifier?

The Argentina national team held a training session in Buenos Aires on Monday, before they travel to Lima to take on Peru in the 4th round of South American qualification ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi trained side by side with the rest of the squad and appeared to be in reasonable shape, but doubts remain over the 36 year-old's fitness to play the full 90 minutes.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni began last Friday's home game against Paraguay with Messi on the bench, although he did bring his skipper on eight minutes into the second half and Messi hit the woodwork twice.

The world champions won that game 1-0 to extend their unbeaten run to 13 matches and given their current form and the past history between the two sides, Peru don't look likely to threaten that record.

Peru haven't beaten Argentina since 1997, a run of 15 matches, and they haven't scored against them in their last three meetings.

Argentina haven't conceded against anyone since the World Cup final in December last year.
