MDV has the honor to sit down and interview 9th Degree BJJ Grandmaster Ricardo Murgel. With almost 7 decades of BJJ and Judo experience, GM Murgel is one of less than 25 living BJJ red belts. Gm Murgel speaks on the early days of BJJ, the art's original focus on realistic self defense, fighting communists in the Brazilian Civil War, being a "black sheep" among the GMs, the ability to develop world champions without compromising his self protection standards, and his interest in Elite You. He also introduces the "Missing Link" concept.

About Grandmaster Ricardo Murgel:

Professor Ricardo Murgel is the Head Coach, Instructor, and Founder of the Union Team. He is one of the few (less than 25) 9th Degree Grandmasters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the world. He has a unique background, with no parallel to any other BJJ Master or Professor.

Professor Murgel is currently 76 years old.He started his Martial Arts & Law Enforcement Journey at the age of 12, back in 1957, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Since 1974, he has trained and is a Judo Black belt. He trained and competed in Europe, Japan and Brazil, for almost 27 years, with extensive training in Boxing, Muay-Thai, Luta Livre (Free Style Grappling), Submission Grappling, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), as a competitor, Instructor, and Coach. I also have weapons expertise covering edged and improvised weapons as well as firearms.

Professor Murgel is the only 9th Degree Grandmaster of BJJ that also is certified by the Peace Officer Standard Training Council (P.O.S.T) as a Guest Defensive Tactics and Firearms Instructor. He has been sharing my practical, hands on experience all over the world for more than four decades now.
