When Pacific Heights Becomes REAL: The LA Tenant Who Demands $100,000 to Leave!

Remember the 1990 film Pacific Heights starring Michael Keaton as a tenant from your worst nightmares? Turns out, life is imitating art with a 2023 version, and it's unfolding in the golden land of opportunity and liberalism: California. A Los Angeles tenant, let's call her "Elizabeth Heror the Tenant from Hell," has ensnared her landlord in a legal quagmire of epic proportions. Lodged in a palatial estate with a lap pool and a sun deck, Heror is refusing to vacate unless she's handed a $100,000 "relocation fee." But it doesn't stop there; she’s been living there for over 500 days without paying rent. Exploiting legal loopholes concerning permits and approved occupancy, she’s become an immovable fixture while the beleaguered property owner still has to pony up for mortgage payments, taxes, and maintenance. No one can accuse Heror of not doing her homework; she previously pulled similar stunts in Oakland.

In the face of pandemic eviction bans and "just cause" ordinances, landlords are burdened with sustaining tenants who see no need to fulfill their end of the deal. Ah, California, where logic is as scarce as common sense and property rights are an antiquated concept. Take Dr. Sasha Jonovic, the luckless landlord in this ordeal. Despite his willingness to bring the unit up to code, Heror won't even let him through the door. You see, a tenant has rights—even when they haven't paid rent for over a year. So if you’re a property owner, think twice about cutting off utilities or forcibly removing a tenant, unless you want a bigger legal mess. California laws are so tenant-friendly, they make armchair landlords with "just cut off the utilities" ideas look like children playing Monopoly. It's a broken system, one that favors opportunistic freeloaders over the very people providing housing in the first place.
