House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced at a closed-door House Republican conference meeting that he is withdrawing his bid to be House speaker. Scalise dropped out of the speaker race on Thursday night after failing to garner enough support in the House GOP conference to be elected in a House floor vote despite winning the conference's nomination on Wednesday. With Scalise's announcement, several House Republicans will likely join the race to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

The U.S. Capitol Police is enhancing security throughout the Capitol on Friday after the leaders of Hamas, a terrorist group that attacked Israel, called for a global day of protests. The Capitol Police said in a statement to the Washington Examiner that, while there are no specific threats to Congress, "We are not taking any chances."

Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX), chairman of the House Small Business Committee, is launching an investigation into a new rule from the Biden administration making single-sale gun sellers subject to gun dealing licenses. In September, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives proposed a change to the definition of "engaged in the business of selling firearms" to include anyone who sells a firearm with the "predominant purpose" of profit.
