Police rescue drowning dog near cranberry bog in Carlisle

A dog is back home with its family after first responders rescued her from drowning in a cranberry bog culvert at a Massachusetts state park in Carlisle.

Carlisle police said they responded to the cranberry bog in Great Brook Farm State Park at about 5:15 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports about a dog that was stuck in a culvert.

Mark Duffy, the owner of Great Brook Dairy Farm, worked with police officers and firefighters to free the 3-year-old black Labrador retriever named Zena, according to authorities.

Police said Duffy inserted wooden planks into the culvert in order to slow the rushing water. Once the water was diverted, first responders could see Zena standing on her hind legs in order to keep her head above the water's surface.

First responders then used a pike pole from the Carlisle Fire Department to hook onto Zena's harness and pull her out of the water. Police said Zena was about 5 feet below the land surface when she was rescued.

After Zena was pulled from the culvert, she was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. Carlisle police said she is now resting and recuperating with her family.

"The Carlisle Police and Fire departments displayed outstanding teamwork in their efforts to save Zena the black Lab, who was trapped for approximately one hour," Carlisle police Chief Andrew Amendola said in a statement. "We hope she has a speedy recovery."
