It was supposed to be a day of celebration, the last day of the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Instead, a massacre. Hamas stormed kibbutz settlements - raiding homes, taking hostages and executing civilians.

The death toll for a single day was unprecedented, one of the darkest days in Jewish history since the end of the Holocaust.

The attack took place just one week ago but already it feels like the impact will be felt for generations.

The Israeli response has been fierce, with parts of Gaza reduced to rubble.

Israel said there are now 1,300 of its citizens dead, while officials in Gaza said more than 1,500 people have lost their lives in the retaliatory strikes.
