About the photo:
Six years ago today we were involved in an almost fatal crash. We were moving from southwest. Alaska and I was following my son that was driving a rental truck (U-Hall). We were almost to the border of Alaska when a snow storm hit. My son decided to pull over till the storm calmed down.
I came around a sweeping corner and I couldn't see the truck because the whole back was covered in snow as most have seen in snow storms. I seen the back of the truck and first thing I did as I hit the breake was look at the speedo. I was going 40 MPH and thought I was going 60 MPH. I only had a fraction of a second to react. At first I thought to go to the right because there was a semi coming at us in the left lane. I couldn't go right because there was a sheer cliff and that would have been bad so I saw I had enought room to possibly squeeze between the semi and the Uhaul. The driver of the truck saw what was happening and he swerved off the road so I figgured I had just enough room to make it. BOOM!!!
I hit the back of the U-Hall just at the headlight on our truck. So initially the truck bumper went underneath the U-hall bumper crushing the the truck totally up agains't Nora. The first thing I heard her say was "I can't breath"!!!! I couldn't open the door because it totally knocked all electrical functions out. I tried busting the window with my elbo (that only works in the movies) My son ran up to the door and pried it open. I told him to get a chain out of the back of the truck (everyone carries some kind of tow rope or chain in Alaska) I told him to back up as close as he can to the truck.
I hooked the chain around the door post and told him to floor it. A couple of pulls and we finally got the dash off my wifes chest. There just happen to be a medic that came upon the crash. (Angels are real) We attempted to get her foot out of the crumpled floorboord. The medic said we needed to cut the back of her shoe and remove her foot. As soon as I cut the back of the shoe I pulled her foot out and the heal pad fell into my hand. I looked at the medic and said "That's not good is it?"
He didn't flinch and we resumed extracting Nora out of the truck. Even though we had to pry the door open the medics still had to pull her out with a gurney on the drivers side back seat. She was in the truck for three hours because of the remoteness. Three med flight later we ended up in Seattle. She was in intensive care for four weeks. In the fifth week they had to "take her leg" as my wife said it. She's a BTK amputee and you would never know it. Besides the foot enjury she had 8 broken ribs, broke both bones in her left arm below the elbow, both hips had to be pinned back in place and her pelvic had to be plated back together....
So you see, Friday 13th October is not my favorited day even though it only happens every six years... She is fine now and getting along very well. Thanks for all the prayers we recieved during that time and beyond...
