Ngemba People speak at the Brewarrina fish traps on Nation Building and the 2023 referendum

Ngemba people, of the Brewarrina Fish Traps, make their voices heard on the issues that affect them such as

Their struggle to maintain Cultural responsibilities in looking after and making use of their fish traps under colonization
Assimilatory Commonwealth practices
The need for First Nation's Building
The need to reaffirm inter Tribal/Nations agreements
Their thoughts on the Referendum for the Voice to Parliament and why they are in opposition
Their personal experience of the Uluru dialogues process

The Brewarrina fish traps are the oldest known man made structure on the planet, it is a highly significant site for all humanity and reflects the ancient, enduring, deep connection and caring for country that Ngemba and other First Nations people hold.

I came out to this country on other business, and in reverence to the significance of the fish traps it was the first place I stopped when I was passing through Brewarrina. Shortly after arriving I met Gregory Bloomfield, who after a brief conversation wanted me to meet his elder, who informs his decision making, Aunty Doreen McHughes.

These people welcomed me into the community with open hearts and they are among some of the most intelligent, passionate, genuine and warm people as I have met anywhere.

If you want First Nations people to have a Voice, then please listen to the people using theirs.
