It may be time to get the Bat Signal out of cold storage in Boston. City police commissioner Michael Cox is “dumfounded” over the city council’s unwillingness to address staffing shortages for a critical crime investigation unit. Despite the support of Cox and Boston’s Democrat mayor, Michelle Wu, additional funding for the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, or “BRIC,” was denied. The proposal would have added eight investigators to crack down on growing homicides, gang violence, and terrorist threats.
Approval of the BRIC unit upgrade would have cost the city just 3.4 million dollars. Boston’s 2023 budget is 3.99 billion dollars. So, it wasn’t fiscal responsibility prompting the progressive council to nix the plan. No, most city council opposition to the plan cited concerns that racial minorities were being unfairly targeted by police.
But failure to address the needs of police investigators is just the tip of the staffing iceberg in Boston. The President of the Police Patrolmen’s Association told Boston’s WBZ Radio that the city is actually short a total of 500 officers.
