How Does an MRI Scan Work?
60 Seconds of Science explains what is happening in the body when it undergoes an MRI.
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan works by using a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body. When a person is inside the MRI machine, the magnetic field aligns the hydrogen atoms in their body. Radio waves are then used to disrupt this alignment briefly. As the hydrogen atoms return to their original alignment, they emit signals that are captured by the MRI machine. These signals are processed to create cross-sectional images of the body's tissues and organs, providing valuable diagnostic information.
