Invasion of Tarawa - World War 2 - Battlestations: Pacific

The Battle of Tarawa was part of Operation Galvanic, the US invasion of the Gilberts. It took place in the Tarawa Atoll, but mostly on the small island of Betio. It was also the first time in the Pacific War that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. The 4,500 Japanese defenders were well supplied and prepared, fighting almost to the last man.
