Date – Thursday, October 12th, 2023 – St. Edwin

1. **St. Edwin’s Background:** Edwin, born in 584, was a prince of the Royal family of Deira in England. His father, King Aelle, was deposed, and Edwin was raised in exile.

2. **Divine Prediction:** A pagan Edwin met a stranger who predicted the restoration of his kingdom if he promised to follow instructions about his salvation. Edwin agreed, and the stranger laid his hand upon Edwin's head as a sign.

3. **Recovery of the Kingdom:** Due to various circumstances, Edwin recovered the Kingdom of Deira and later became the King of all Northumbria, one of the seven parts into which England was divided at the time.

4. **Marriage and Conversion:** After the death of his first wife, Edwin married the Catholic Princess Ethelburga. He allowed her to practice her religion and promised to study the truths of the Catholic Faith. St. Paulinus, Archbishop of York, influenced him positively.

5. **Conversion and Baptism:** Edwin converted to Christianity after a series of events, including a failed assassination attempt and the birth of his daughter Enflaed, the first Catholic baptized in his kingdom. He was baptized on Easter 627 by St. Paulinus.

6. **Papal Influence:** Pope Boniface V sent a letter and gifts to encourage Edwin in his faith, but Edwin remained a pagan initially.

7. **Defeat and Martyrdom:** St. Edwin faced defeat and death at the Battle of Hatfield Chase on October 12, 633, against pagan King Penda of Mercia and Welsh Prince Cadwallon.

8. **Comparison with Christ:** The life of St. Edwin, ending in defeat, emphasizes the reality of defeats in the fight against the Revolution. Prof. Plinio draws parallels with Christ’s apparent defeat, emphasizing that from defeats, great victories can emerge.

9. **Acceptance of Defeats:** Defeats in the fight against the Revolution should be accepted as part of the battle. Defeats are normal in any war, and a manly spirit faces them and continues the fight for the Catholic cause.

10. **Model of Fortitude:** St. Edwin’s life serves as a model of fortitude and perseverance in the fight against the Revolution, whether in victory or defeat. His story teaches the importance of enduring in the battle for the Catholic faith.

St. Edwin, pray for us!
