For almost two decades, Israel has largely managed to contain any potential threat from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with high walls, acres of barbed wire and swarms of surveillance drones.
But none of that protected it on Saturday morning.
So how did Hamas break through Israel's seemingly impenetrable defence? And will their actions break the cycle of violence, or take it to a new level?
