The Carpathians are a historical region covering the Ukrainian part of this mountain system to the east of Central Europe. It borders Poland and Romania. Three Ukrainian sub-ethnic groups live here: Hutsuls, Boyks, and Lemks. The peculiar isolation in the mountains contributed to the preservation of their cultural identity. Here are located the highest mountain massifs of Ukraine, numerous reserves, nature and landscape parks, popular tourist routes, ski and balneological resorts. Many authentic crafts and customs have been preserved in the Carpathians. Here, local residents prepare cheese and bake bread according to original recipes, produce traditional clothes and musical instruments.
