US doubles down on Israel support as bombs rain on Gaza

The US president redoubled Washington's support for Israel in an impassioned speech on Tuesday. Biden decried the Hamas attacks as "sheer evil", saying that 14 US citizens were among those killed in

Israel and others were taken hostage.

Biden pledged further military assistance for Israel, which already receives $3.8bn in US military aid, and said the US had shifted its military posture in the region to send a message to anyone "seeking to take

advantage" of the conflict. In response, Hamas said that Biden's speech "did not point to the massacres committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people in cold blood and under the nose of the whole world".
