What would the world be without sound? There’d be no symphony by Beethoven, “Hey Jude” by the Beatles, iconic pop songs by Michael Jackson. Just imagine banging a huge titanium bell as hard as you can without even hearing anything. Obviously, the gift of sound is amazing…and mysterious. There are so many things that have to be explained about this topic. Aside from the dictionary definition of what “sound” is, what really do you know about it? What are the explanations behind it? According to experts, sound is perceived as such because of one primary element – frequency. Frequency, in the context of sound, is described as the number of waves/wavelengths passing through a fixed place in a particular period of time. It can also be summarized as the “vibration” of an audible element. All forms of sound are measured in terms of frequency. This way sound will be perceived is dependent on the way its frequency demonstrates. The sound of a typical ringing phone will sound differently if its frequency or the vibration will be modified.

Without this basic component, it is impossible for an element to be audible. The effect of sound is further sub-divided on to three different elements. These include ‘binaural beats’, synesthesia, and cymatics. These three combined creates a particular macro-element called sound, which in turn affects a listener or other phenomena.

Binaural beat – this is a form of auditory illusion that the brain perceives when two distinctive pure-tone waves in a given time and space are presented into the ears. There are several processes occurring that lead to the perception of this audible component. These include the passing of sound waves through the ear to certain parts of the brain resulting in precipitation of electrical impulses along the neural pathways and other cerebral regions.

Synesthesia – is a phenomenon in which two or more body senses perceive a particular element. It can be existent on some other elements but in the case of sound, synesthesia happens when the sense of hearing simultaneously works with the sense of sight and touch for example to perceive sound. In other words, this is a combined perception. This is sometimes the reason why some people tend to have a greater appreciation of sound. Their multiple sensations of it make them possible to wander into new and unique paradigms sound has to offer.

Cymatics – this refers to the wave subset of vibrations that forms a phenomenon. To make it clearer, the effect of sound waves on an individual’s conscious mind is rooted to cymatics. The formation of vibrations can influence the neurological state of a person. This is the reason why certain kinds of sound can cause relaxation or anxiety to a listener.

Over the years, humans have learned how to manipulate, appreciate, and respond to different forms of sound. Now, the way sound is being perceived, utilized, and valued has gone farther than one could ever imagine. All these can never be possible without the gradual disclosure of the secrets and science of sound.
