Hamas militants launched a barrage of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli towns, leaving dozens dead and abducting others during a major Jewish holiday. Israel responded with airstrikes in Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring a state of war against Hamas, vowing to make them pay an "unprecedented price."
Hamas fighters entered as many as 22 locations outside Gaza, including towns up to 15 miles from the border, engaging in gun battles with civilians and soldiers as Israel scrambled to respond. Hostages were held in standoffs in two towns, while militants occupied a police station in a third.
Israeli media reported over 250 casualties and 1,500 wounded in the attack, making it one of the deadliest incidents in decades for Israel. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported at least 232 casualties and 1,700 wounded in Gaza from Israeli strikes, with Hamas taking an unknown number of civilians and soldiers captive.
The situation has raised concerns of further escalation, given Israel's pledge to retaliate. The attack comes amid longstanding tensions, with Palestinians enduring a lengthy blockade and an unresolved peace process. Netanyahu vowed to destroy Hamas' capabilities, but cautioned that the conflict would be protracted and challenging.
Hamas leader Mohammed Deif cited multiple grievances, including the blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids in the West Bank, violence at Al Aqsa, settler attacks on Palestinians, and settlement growth, as reasons for the attack.
The timing of the attack on Simchat Torah, a joyous Jewish holiday, drew comparisons to a historic moment in Israeli history, as it coincided with the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Critics questioned how Hamas managed to catch Israel off guard in such a coordinated attack.
The abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers presents a complex issue for Israel, which has a history of lopsided prisoner exchanges. Israel is reportedly holding thousands of Palestinians in its prisons.
The international community expressed concern, with U.S. President Joe Biden asserting Israel's right to self-defense. Saudi Arabia called for restraint, while Lebanon's Hezbollah congratulated Hamas on the operation.
The attack occurred against a backdrop of internal divisions in Israel over proposed judicial reforms and simmering tensions with Palestinians in the occupied territories. Palestinian protests erupted in the West Bank, resulting in casualties.
The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further escalation and a prolonged conflict.
