Where did Halloween come from?
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated over 2000 years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth and potentially cause mischief. To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes made from animal heads and skins. They also left offerings of food and drinks to appease the spirits. The practice of trick-or-treating has its roots in medieval Europe when people would go door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food.
