Lead fishing weights are no longer cheap and in many places face a ban because let's be honest lead is a toxic material. Stone fishing weights on the other hand have been around as long as people have gone fishing and this is a simple way to make effective stone weights using a bit of stainless wire and some epoxy.

Tools and materials

Stones, best to use something soft, sandstone, limestone, soapstone, schist, find a good local source maybe a river or lake or the beach or even buy them at a garden centre and test them with a masonry drill.

4 mm masonry drill

Abrasive stone, diamond or other to make a flat spot

Vise with some kind of softwood to deform and properly hold the stone in place

5min epoxy or similar, the 5 min refers to the initial cure time but it needs to be left overnight to fully cure, read the instructions (not that i ever do)

Press seal bags to make a it easier to fill the small hole

.6-1mm stainless steel welding wire or galvanised steel wire, i bought mine from a big box store about 8 years ago for £10 and it will probably last me a lifetime
