WEX Wakeup: McConnell urges next speaker to abolish motion to vacate; Christie calls Trump a 'felon'

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urged former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) replacement on Wednesday to eliminate the motion to vacate after the procedural tool was used to force the latter’s historic ouster. McCarthy announced his decision not to seek the speaker’s gavel again on Tuesday, shortly after coming just shy of the 218 votes needed to win back the role. He had lost the gavel earlier in the day when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate, ending his speakership less than nine months after it began.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced a barrage of questions on Wednesday about Tuesday's ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) but repeatedly declined to characterize President Joe Biden's feelings about the situation. Earlier in the day, Biden told reporters that he was concerned that the "dysfunction" on display in the House might jeopardize his legislative agenda and future aid for Ukraine.

2024 presidential candidate Chris Christie called former President Donald Trump "a convicted felon," asking voters if they want someone like Trump as their president again. Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, is running against Trump in the Republican Party's 2024 presidential primary race, though the former president is still far ahead in polling. Christie has made a name for himself on the campaign trail as the most anti-Trump Republican candidate, stating that he does not care about people's dislike for his vitriol for the former president.
