Abraham, now a venerable patriarch, felt the weight of his years. Despite being blessed in so many aspects of life, one important task weighed heavily on his mind: finding a suitable wife for his beloved son, Isaac.

He called Eliezer, his most trusted servant, to his side. “Place your hand under my thigh as a sacred oath,” he instructed. “I entrust you with the gravest of missions. You must go to the land of my forefathers and find a wife for Isaac. Do not, under any circumstance, select a Canaanite woman.”

Eliezer hesitated, “What if the woman refuses to come here? Shall I bring Isaac to your homeland?”

“Absolutely not!” Abraham thundered. “An angel of the Lord shall guide you. If you are unable to convince the woman, you will be free from this oath. But never take my son away from this promised land.”

Eliezer placed his hand under Abraham’s thigh, swearing an oath to carry out this sacred mission.

Loaded with lavish gifts, Eliezer led ten camels across arid landscapes and rugged hills, finding himself eventually in Mesopotamia, at the city of Nahor. As the sun dipped toward the horizon, he stopped by a well just outside the city—the watering hole where women came to draw water.

Eliezer, standing by the well, prayed silently, “Lord, guide me today. The woman who offers me and my camels a drink will be the one you’ve chosen for Isaac.”

Before his prayer was complete, a stunning young woman named Rebekah appeared, carrying a pitcher. Eliezer ran up to her and asked for a sip of water.

“Drink, my lord,” she replied and also offered to draw water for his camels. Eliezer marveled at her kindness, and once the camels had their fill, he gave her gifts—a golden nose ring and bracelets.

“Who are you?” he asked, intrigued yet cautious.

“I am Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel,” she answered.

He bowed in reverence, uttering a silent prayer of gratitude.

Rebekah led Eliezer to her home, where he was greeted by her brother, Laban. Upon hearing the tale and seeing the gifts, Laban welcomed him, declaring, “This is clearly the Lord’s doing.”

Eliezer insisted on sharing the purpose of his journey before even considering food or rest. Moved by his tale and sincerity, Laban and Bethuel consented to the marriage.

“The Lord has willed this,” they proclaimed.

Before sunrise, Eliezer was ready to return. Despite Rebekah’s family’s request for more time, he insisted, “The Lord has prospered my journey. Delay me not.”

Rebekah herself was resolute. “I will go,” she said, sealing her own destiny.

Isaac, who had been meditating in a field, looked up to see a caravan approaching. Rebekah, atop one of the camels, saw him in the distance. Dismounting, she veiled her face, signaling her readiness to enter a new phase of life.

As Eliezer recounted the miraculous events leading him to Rebekah, Isaac took her into his mother Sarah’s tent. Rebekah became his wife, his comfort, and his love, filling the void left by Sarah’s passing.

Thus, Abraham’s faith led to the fulfillment of a divine promise, blessing not only him but countless generations to come.
