In a move that has set a hot international agenda, the United States has handed over to Ukraine large quantities of Iranian ammunition seized last year. The US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, announced that these Iranian shells were actually seized on a ship that was about to be sent to Yemen.
The information that the Iranian shells were delivered to Ukraine on Monday came after the US government seized them through confiscation. Interestingly, the bullets stem from an allegation between the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Allegedly, the Iranian government is supporting the war in Ukraine by brokering the supply of weapons.
Since the beginning of Yemen's civil war, Iran has been accused of supplying arms and ammunition to the rebels known as the Houthis. But a 2015 United Nations Security Council resolution prohibits the transfer of arms to the Houthis.
The move comes at a time when the United States is looking for alternative ways to help Ukraine. Despite warnings that aid funds for Ukraine are running out, there are objections from the Republican wing in the House of Representatives, which is blocking the allocation of funds. However, winning the vote to impeach House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday means that a new aid vote has been postponed, meaning that aid to Ukraine is on hold.
