America Is Not A Serious Country

Matt Gaetz “What's Demigender?”

Lieutenant General Richard Clark “Sir, that's a term of the people that are eligible for that particular scholarship that is available to...”

Gaetz “What's a demigender person?”

Clark “It's a person who looks at their gender in a different way than I do, sir.”

Gaetz “Well, sure, that's all of these people. You're a cisgender man. You don't even get to apply. Well... Do you know what demigender really means?”

Clark “I'm not really sure, sir.”

Gaetz “Right. So, do you know what agender means? All one word, not a (space) gender but agender.”

Clark “Sir, I don't.”

Gaetz “Right, so here we are pushing a fellowship, calling for people that you don't even know what the words mean, and the number one group of people, the cisgender men, are excluded. Now in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion, should we be pushing programs that we can't define that exclude the largest group of service members.” Demigender is a term used within the realm of gender identity and is a part of the broader spectrum of non-binary gender identities. A demigender person identifies partially, but not entirely, with a particular gender. They may feel that their gender is a mix of two or more genders or that their gender is closely related to, but not the same as, a specific gender.

For example:

Demigirl: Someone who is assigned female at birth but only partially identifies as a girl or woman. They may feel a connection to being female but also feel another gender identity simultaneously.

Demiboy: A person who is assigned male at birth but only partially identifies as a boy or man. They may feel a connection to being male but also have another gender identity.

Demi nonbinary: This term might be used by someone who identifies partially as non-binary but also has some connection to another gender.

It's important to note that demigender identities are highly individual and personal, and people may use these terms to describe their experiences with gender in ways that feel right for them. The language around gender identity continues to evolve, and demigender is one of the terms that has emerged to help individuals express their gender identity more accurately. Respect for individuals' chosen gender identities and pronouns is crucial to creating inclusive and supportive environments for all.
